Terry was born in Broken Hill and went to a Catholic boarding school in the Adelaide Hills. He enjoyed the community of boarding school however having an adventurous, fast moving mind, felt somewhat constrained by the regimented traditions. Terry did not want to be held back and looked to the business world to satisfy his appetite for challenge and variety. He worked for a number of different companies and was the Commercial Manager for CSR and James Hardie, looking over multi-million dollar budgets.
